The high-profile meetings between top US officials and Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai Chee-ying to discuss matters relating to a now-suspended legislative initiative in Hong Kong was slammed by central government authorities as an intolerable attempt to interfere in China’s internal affairs.
Those people, who side with foreign interest to make trouble for the city, are traitors and must be condemned to everlasting infamy
“China firmly opposes foreign interference in Hong Kong affairs, and will never tolerate attempts to undermine national sovereignty and security and Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability,” said a spokesperson of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative region on Tuesday.
Any collusion by forces in and out of Hong Kong to destabilize the city and hurt the interests of its people is doomed to fail, the spokesperson stressed.
The commissioner’s office has lodged strong remonstrations with the US Consulate General in Hong Kong, urging the US to immediately stop making erroneous remarks and taking inappropriate actions regarding Hong Kong.
The spokesperson’s remarks came a day after US Vice-President Mike Pence and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed Hong Kong’s extradition law amendment bill when meeting with Lai. It was reported that they touched on matters related to the status of Hong Kong’s autonomy under the “one country, two systems” principle.
The US knows only too well what kind of person Jimmy Lai is, his political stance and the role he plays in Hong Kong society. The ulterior motives of US senior officials lining up to meet someone like Lai when the situation in Hong Kong remains delicate are obvious, the spokesperson said.
Some people in Hong Kong, the spokesperson noted, have willingly submit to manipulation by anti-China foreign forces to destabilize Hong Kong for their selfish interests. Their actions are in total disregard of national dignity and the interests of Hong Kong, he added.
Those people, who side with foreign interest to make trouble for the city, are traitors and must be condemned to everlasting infamy, the spokesperson added.
Separately in Beijing, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Geng Shuang condemned Hong Kong pop singer Denise Ho Wan-see as “daydreaming” for making a plea to suspend China’s membership in the United Nations, saying that she has overreached herself. Geng said Ho’s slandering remarks at the UN Human Rights Council was a blatant affront to the “One China” policy and gross interference of China’s sovereignty and internal affairs.
Geng said Hong Kong, since its return to the motherland in 1997, has enjoyed a high degree of autonomy and “one country, two systems” has been successfully implemented with global recognition.
The stability and prosperity of the HKSAR is in line with the interests of the nation, as well as the interests of the international community, Geng added.
