Hong Kong plays a key role in the Belt and Road Initiative by supplying mature business services such as finance, insurance, accounting and legal support, the government notes.
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau Tang-wah pointed out the B&R Initiative was vital in driving Hong Kong’s future social and economic development. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government would strive to take forward the initiative, and would make the most of the B&R Joint Conference mechanism to strengthen communication, collaboration and mutual support with central authorities. As the key B&R link, Hong Kong would leverage its advantages in meeting the country’s needs.
Addressing initiative's needs will be important driver for city's economy, commerce secretary says
Yau spoke after attending the first B&R Joint Conference convened in Beijing yesterday. The Joint Conference mechanism was agreed at the meeting, at which the strategy to promote Hong Kong’s full participation in the B&R Initiative and work priorities for the year were also discussed.
After the meeting, Yau said: “Hong Kong should take advantage of some professional aspect, especially the capital construction. In this way, Hong Kong could offer help in issues related to financing, insurance, accounting and law in business.”
The Chinese mainland’s open-door policy has made it easier for lawyers from Hong Kong and Macao, and holidaymakers cruising on their own yachts, to enter the mainland under Beijing’s plan to open up its “service trade”.
Yau also said Hong Kong hopes to share all opportunities with central authorities. The city also hopes to take every chance offered by B&R projects in order to explore more business cooperation. Communication and cooperation with citizens and all sections of mainland society matter to further development.
